TLC Story

Justin and Lacy McKay visited Denver for their honeymoon and noticed the city lacked churches. In 2020, they moved to Denver to begin their journey with the SEND Network. During Justin’s first vision tour around the city, he felt called to plant a church in Arvada, CO, a city in Northwest Metro Denver booming with young families. Justin and Lacy have an undeniable love for Arvada and feel that God chose this place specifically for them and at this time. After much prayer, team building, and help from church partners nationwide, The Local Church officially launched on February 22, 2022. Since then, they have seen 22 people say yes to Jesus, 11 baptisms, and an average of over 120 attendees each weekend. The congregation has also seen groups, local missions, a membership process, and generosity thrive. The Local Church is quickly becoming a local and intergenerational church for the people of Arvada.

My name is Janell, and I’ve struggled with drug addiction for most of my adult life. With that being said, I’ve struggled with my faith as well. I’ve always believed in God, but I just struggled to feel his presence in my life during active addiction. I was just over 30 days clean and sober when a good friend of mine invited me to go to a newly planted church with her for Easter. I jumped at the opportunity to attend because I felt God’s pull for me to become a part of something I hadn’t experienced before. Once I attended TLC for Easter service, I felt like I was a part of something special and a family. I have been a part of TLC for about two years now. Pastor Justin baptized me, and I have completely given my life to Jesus. I now have that relationship with God that I longed for, and I feel his presence in my life today. Not only am I a proud child of God, but I belong to the TLC family! There have been times when I needed help, and my TLC family has been there without hesitation. I’m beyond grateful for TLC

The Pastor of the church we were attending introduced Pastor Justin as the Pastor of a new church in Arvada. We were very interested in church plants, so we met Pastor Justin at a coffee shop to learn more about TLC. A year later, we attended a baptism for a friend of ours at TLC. Right away, we felt welcome as a part of a family. We knew that day this would be our new church. TLC is special because we hear the heartfelt teaching of Scripture and the Gospel. The worship team is not performing, they are praising God. Lastly, we love the multigenerational congregation!

The last place you think you will find your new church home is at a community festival but that is exactly what happened to us. We were enjoying all the food and drink booths at the Taste of Arvada and happened by a TLC booth that Justin was working. I can’t even recall all of the conversation, but Justin’s passion for the Lord and for Arvada stuck with me. We had become very sporadic church attenders at our pre-COVID church home, just never truly feeling connected, and Justin had stayed in touch with me periodically. It seemed clear to us, finally, that we should go check TLC out. This was probably a year after first meeting Justin at that booth. From the moment we walked into the service it was obvious that the TLC family was just that…a welcoming, Jesus-loving, grace-filled family. We knew from that first visit that this was where the Lord had been preparing our hearts to be. We are blessed to be members of a church with transparent, welcoming and non-pretentious folks who strive to know and serve the Lord!

I had been attending another church in Arvada the first semester of my freshman year of college. I felt like that wasn’t where the Lord wanted me to stay. One Sunday, I went to church and several pastors in the area came to speak about the churches they were planting. Justin came onto stage and told the congregation about TLC. He encouraged us to come to the first service if TLC was on our way to the church I was attending at the time. Sure enough, when I plugged the address into my GPS, The Local Church was 5 minutes closer to my apartment than that church! From my first Sunday at TLC, I felt welcome, seen, and desired as a part of the church community. TLC has continually been a place where I am able to use the gifts that God has given me to love others well. The Lord has worked clearly in my life by providing such incredible accountability, relationships, and opportunities to serve over the past two years. I am so thankful for God’s direction in my life to join TLC and make His name known in Arvada and beyond!

For many months, Justin and Lacy prayed Luke 10:2, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” The answers to those prayers are these passionate and gifted people. Either part-time or volunteering, each team member is passionate and sold out to the mission of The Local Church.

Justin & Lacy McKay

Justin is from Birmingham, AL, and attended the University of Alabama for undergrad, Luther Rice Seminary for an MA in Christian Leader, and is currently in progress at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary working on his MDiv. Justin has an undeniable passion for serving others and the city of Arvada. He loves being in the mountains, lifting weights, and being a girl dad. Before church planting, he spent 12 years serving as a worship pastor.

In 2015, he married Lacy, a biblical counselor who loves hosting people in her home and baking sourdough bread. As a mom of two daughters (Posy 3, Maple 1), Lacy is passionate about connecting with other women in the community.
